The Tech Square Afghan

Build your knitting skills one square at a time!

 Cost:  $20/class. Yarn must be purchased in our store. You will receive a 10% discount on materials purchased for this project. This is a great way to learn new patterns and techniques and at the end of the year, you will have an heirloom quality afghan! 

Materials:   
Tech Square Afghan Book by Joanne Clark

Yarn: You may want to purchase yarn as you go along.  This will allow you to use leftovers in the next square.  Approximate yardage to make the afghan shown on the cover of the book are: Cream 330 yds, light grey/beige 440 yds, taupe 660 yds, dk brown 1,210 yds, charcoal 330 yds.  Approx. yarn requirements for individual squares are also available

Needles: Size 7 or 8 needles to obtain a gauge of 18 stitches=4”.  Some squares will require circular or double point needles. This information is listed in the Tech Square Afghan book.  You will also need a crochet hook size H, and various other items typically found in your knitting basket, as listed in the book. 

Friday September 9, 2011 5-7pm  Cables & Lace Square
You will learn:  provisional cast on, to follow lace and cable charts, and various increases and decreases  (kfb increase, pfb increase) 

Friday October 14, 2011 5-7 pm  Increase Square
You will learn: provisional cast on, half-hitch increases, kfb increase, yarn over, and mattress stitch seam 

Friday November 11, 2011 5-7 pm  Decrease Square
You will learn:  circular knitting, different methods of decreasing, reading a pattern chart, working on double-pointed needles, knitted I-cord 

Friday December 9, 2011  Forest for the Trees Square
You will learn: chart reading, various traveling stitches, increasing in the stitch below

 Friday January 13, 2012 5-7pm  Pocket Square
Straight or circular needles #7, #8. Book Tech Square Afghan by Joanne Clark 

Friday February 10, 2012 5-7pm (You are half-way done!) Embellishment Square
You will learn: provisional cast on, knitted cord, embellishments, 3D knitting 

Friday March 16, 2012 5-7pm 
Intarsia Square 
You will learn: provisional cast on, following a chart, interlocking yarns in intarsia knitting 

Friday April 13, 2012 5-7pm
  Entrelac Square
You will learn: provisional cast on, picking up stitches on both knit and purl sides of work, the exciting and versatile technique of entrelac knitting 

May 11, 2012 5-7pm 
Domino Square
You will learn: provisional cast on, preparing edges for stitches to be picked up, various double decreases, the domino or miter square technique

June 8, 2012  5-7pm
 
Fair Isle Square
You will learn:  creating, knitting, and cutting a steek, backward loop cast on, charting, 2-handed stranded knitting in the round, double hem with 3-needle join

 July 13, 2012 5-7pm 
Slipped Stitch Square  You will learn:  picking up stitches, reading a slipped-stitch chart 

August 10, 2012 5-7pm 
Monogram Square
You will learn: various stitch patterns, duplicate stitch 

September 14, 2012 5-7pm  Finishing the Afghan  
We plan layout, begin joining, pick up and knit borders, and cover blocking. An additional class will be scheduled if necessary.
